The v60 is a popular manual pour over brewing method that produces a clean, delicious cup of coffee. It's a simple and affordable way to brew coffee that doesn't require any expensive equipment, only the v60 dripper, v60 filter, kettle, scale, and of course, good coffee.
Here's a step-by-step guide to brewing coffee with a v60:
Step 1: Preheat
Preheat your brewing equipment by pouring hot water over the v60 dripper and the mug you'll be using to drink your coffee.
Step 2: Grind your coffee
Grind your coffee beans to a medium-fine consistency. If you’re using the Baratza Encore, it will be setting #14-15. You'll need to grind 15-17 grams of coffee for a single cup of coffee.
Step 3: Add the filter and coffee
Place the V paper filter into the v60 dripper and rinse it with hot water. This will remove any paper flavor and preheat the dripper and your mug. Discard the water and add your coffee grounds to the v60.
Step 4: Bloom the coffee
Pour enough hot water over the coffee grounds to fully saturate them, then let the coffee "bloom" for 30-45 seconds. This releases any trapped gases and helps to extract more flavor from the coffee.
Step 5: Pour the water
Slowly pour hot water (between 195-205°F) over the coffee in a circular motion, starting from the center and working your way outwards. Aim to pour enough water to reach 2-3 inches below the rim of the v60 dripper.
Step 6: Continue pouring
As the water level in the dripper decreases, continue pouring in a circular motion to maintain an even extraction.
If you are using an 1:18 ratio (the golden ratio), you will be pouring 18g of water for every 1g of coffee so if you are using 15g of coffee, that will be 270g of water you will need to pour (15gx18g=270g)
Try to finish pouring within 2-3 minutes.
Step 7: Enjoy your coffee!
Once the water has drained through the v60, discard the used filter and enjoy your freshly brewed coffee.
Tips:
- Experiment with different coffee-to-water ratios and grind sizes to find the extraction you like best.
- Use a gooseneck kettle for more precise pouring.
- If your coffee tastes sour, it is probably under-extracted, try using a finer grind or hotter water. If it tastes too bitter, try using a coarser grind or cooler water.
- Practice makes perfect! Don't be discouraged if your first few attempts don't turn out as you hoped. Keep practicing and experimenting until you find the perfect recipe for you.
